Olaide Adekunle, 33, was detained by officers from the Ogun State police command for reportedly selling her 18-month-old child to an unnamed buyer for the sum of N600,000.
The suspect was apprehended when the woman’s husband, Nureni Rasaq, filed a complaint at the Sango divisional headquarters, alleging that his wife, Olaide Adekunle, had been to Lagos with their infant daughter, Moridiat Rasaq, on March 15, 2023, but had returned home without her.He continued by saying that attempts to find out what happened to the infant were futile because the mother was unable to provide any plausible explanation for the baby’s whereabouts.
Following the report, CSP Dahiru Saleh, the DPO for the Sango division, assigned his investigators to find the woman, and she was soon taken into custody. During questioning, the suspect admitted that she had sold her child for N600,000 to a person in Lagos.
When questioned about the circumstances surrounding her behavior, the woman responded that she had borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and when she was unable to repay it, the bank’s employees began to harass her and threatened to take drastic measures. As a result, she sprinted to Lagos and began peddling sachet water. She claimed that she met a man who led her to the Lagos woman who ultimately purchased the child while hawking.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Babakura Muhammed, has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby.
