Sadio Mane Pipes Salah To African Player of the Year Award

Liverpool star Sadio Mane has beaten his Reds teammate Mohamed Salah to be named as Africa’s Footballer of the Year for 2019.

Senegal star Mane picks up the award for the first time in his career having finished second in the last two seasons and third in 2016.

Egyptian icon Salah won the award in each of the last two years, but 2019 saw Mane’s importance to Liverpool grow to a level that equalled and often surpassed his teammate.

Manchester City’s Algerian star Riyad Mahrez was also nominated having helped his nation to the African Nations Cup, beating Mane’s Senegal 1-0 in the final.

Mahrez was unable to attend the ceremony in Cairo as he is involved in City’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United on Tuesday night, while Salah was also absent from the event in his home country, and was pictured in training with Liverpool on Tuesday .

Mane’s 22 Premier League goals in the 2018/19 season led to him sharing the Golden Boot with Salah and Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Both Reds forwards played huge roles as Jurgen Klopp’s side won the Champions League in June, with Salah scoring a penalty in the final victory over Tottenham in Madrid.

Mane then netted a brace as Liverpool beat Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final at the beginning of this season, and both played their part as Klopp’s men lifted the Club World Cup in Qatar last month with a 1-0 victory over Flamengo in the final.

Both are key members of the Liverpool squad that have started this season with 19 wins from their 20 Premier League matches as the Reds seek a first top-flight title in 30 years.

Mane also finished ahead of Salah in voting for the 2019 Ballon d’Or award, coming in fourth ahead of the Egyptian in fifth.
