Police Asked Me To Confess To Robbery, Tortured Me – Victim Tells Ekiti Judicial Panel

A petitioner, 30-year-old Mr Ayotomiwa Elegbeleye, on Thursday told the Ekiti State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Allegations of Police Brutality that he was arrested by men of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad at Ikere Ekiti in Ekiti State over a trumped-up armed robbery allegation.


Elegbeleye said the SARS operated invaded his house around 11.55pm on January 7, 2020, and took him to their office where he was allegedly tortured repeatedly.



The victim, who came to testify before the panel from the a correctional centre, said the SARS men requested N500,000 from him to secure his release, adding that his inability to produce the amount led to his being tortured with a pressing iron for 23 days.


He said, “I was hanged up with a rod. I gasped for breath begging them to release me, but they said I will only be released with the payment of N500,000. After 23 days in their custody and with serious bodily injuries, they took me to the Police Hospital in Okesa, Ado Ekiti when they felt I might die due to my deteriorating health condition,” Elegbeleye said.
