A fire incident has destroyed about one hundred shops with goods stored in them at the Uwelu motor spare parts market in Benin City the Edo State capital.
The Chairman of the Motor Spare Parts Association, Uwelu branch, Ibie Osaretin, who confirmed the incident told pressmen, said they got the fire alert around 11:00 pm on Monday.
According to him, they were, however, unable to salvage the situation early enough to recover goods from the shops.
He, therefore, appealed to the government and relevant bodies to come to the aid of the traders so that they can recover their loss and return to business.
Channels TV visited the scene of the incident and some of the traders were in tears as they lamented and counted their losses.
Also speaking on the matter, the Vice-Chairman of the Egor Local Government Area where the market is situated assured the traders that the government would intervene in their predicament.
